Photocopies of three handwritten articles (one partial) on subjects pertaining to California. Written for an unidentified newspaper, the articles contain edits, notes, and instructions to editors and printers for the placement of images and photographs. In "A California Robin Hood" (22 p.) Smith tells the story of his interview with Joel Dalton, a Gold Rush pioneer living in Oregon, who had an encounter with Joaquín Murietta, the famed Mexican bandit known as "The Mexican Robin Hood." Dalton, a man who spoke Spanish and was friendly with the Mexican people, risked arrest when he refused to confirm Murietta's identity to the sheriff who had just arrested him. "Trout fishing on Kern River, California" (20 p.) is a detailed account of a fly-fishing trip to Kern River and the surrounding area. The partial manuscript (6 p., missing p. 1-2) appears to be a biographical sketch of the scientist Alexander Van Humboldt.

James Perrin Smith was born near Cokesburg, South Carolina on November 27, 1864. In 1890 he went to Gittingen, Germany, to study under Professor von Koenen and Professor Liebisch where he received his Ph.D. degree in 1892. After returning to the United States he accepted an invitation from Dr. J.C. Branner to become Professor of Paleontology and Mineralogy at Leland Stanford University, California, where he remained until his death.
